How to Take Spiriva
Spiriva is found in capsulated form and must not be swallowed. It is strictly for oral inhalation and must be used with the Handihaler device only. Swallowing the capsules will not lead to the intended benefits of the medication.
The typical dosage recommendation for this medication is usually two inhalations of the powder content of the medication; to be taken once each day. The admonition procedure of the medication is as follows: The capsule must be placed in the central chamber of the device. By pressing and releasing the green button on the side of the device, the capsule must be pierced. This leads to the dispersion of the formulation of the medication; which needs to be inhaled through the mouthpiece.
Each Spiriva capsule consists of the tiotropium formulation in the form of dry powder. 18 mcg of the formulation is present in each capsule. The medication is usually available in cartons containing 5, 30 and 90 Spiriva capsules respectively.
For optimum benefit, the medication must be used regularly. The dosage must not be missed and by no means should you take double dosages to make up for the missed dosage. In case of an overdose, seek immediate medical attention. The symptoms of an overdose include dry mouth, redness of the eye, constipation, stomach pain, confusion and drowsiness.
